Last Updated: May 1st, 2019

In this article, I’m going to solely focus on how to stop sound from leaving a room. There are many reasons why you might want to stop noise from leaving your room, it might be that your a lover of music and you like to play loud, so preventing noise from leaving will ensure that your neighbors won’t be disturbed while you enjoy your playlist.

Whatever your reason may be, sometimes it’s very hard to contain noise inside due to most walls and doors been too thin. Which is why after reading this guide you should be able to reduce most of the noise that escapes out of your room.

There are many ways in which you can easily soundproof your room and prevent most noise and sound from leaving. So without further ado, let’s get started.

How to Stop Sound From Leaving a Room

1. Soundproof the Doors

The first thing I recommend doing is soundproof the doors using weatherstripping tapes. So before you consider taking on your walls, floors or ceilings the door is the first thing you should soundproof.

This is mainly because doors can be a big sound leaker as noise can very easily travel through them. Cheap doors are usually made of thin materials which are completely hollow.

Another thing you should keep in mind is that poorly fitted door will have big gaps around the frame which will allow airborne noise to freely enter your room.

This is why I recommend sound dampening the door using weatherstripping tape, (check price on Amazon). I personally think this is the best and most cost-effective way to get the job done. What I really like about this product is the fact that it’s super cheap making it a great choice for those on a tight budget.

Installing weather stripping is very simple, particularly if you buy stripping that is self-adhesive. All you will need to do is peel off the back and press it tightly into place and you’re finished.

Alternatively, you can also hang soundproof blankets or curtains over the door. I know this might sound like a bad idea but I can guarantee that it works. The only downside is that it’s not appealing, so I only recommend this for a room in a hidden area.

2. Use Soundproof Curtains

By the time your finish with your doors a lot of the sound will be unable to escape the room you’re working on. However, to make things much better, using a noise reduction curtain will help to absorb sounds and echoes in the room.

It is very important to know that soundproofing curtains will not be able to completely block the noise, but you will absolutely experience a reduction in the amount of noise escaping your room.

There are lots of different soundproofing curtains to choose from on the market. So instead of searching around, I recommend going with the NICETOWN Thermal Noise Reduction Drapes (Click here to see the current price on Amazon). I’ve personally used this curtain myself and I can guarantee that it’s worth the buy.

3. Soundproof the Walls

If you’ve tried all the steps above and none seem to be as effective as you want them to be, then your problem may be that your walls are too thin. If this seems to be the case then there are two effective ways to go about sound dampening the walls, you can either go straight for the Green Glue and drywall sandwich or simply install some acoustic foam panels.

Adding Drywall Using Green Glue

Green Glue and drywall sandwich is probably the most effective way to dampen noise and sounds. Green Glue is a product with soundproofing properties which works best when it’s applied between two hard surfaces. It’s one of the most successful product when it comes to soundproofing which is why it has so many positive feedback. So what you can do here is place the Green Glue on your existing drywall and place another layer of drywall on top. You can also add another layer on top if you would like.

This method is a bit costly for those on a tight budget compared to using acoustic foam, but it’s also considered to be the most effective.

Acoustic Foam Panels

If you are on a budget then this is probably the way to go. If the noise in your room is too loud using acoustic foam won’t do much to stop it from leaving. Acoustic foams are not very good at blocking sounds, in fact, they’re much better at improving the acoustic qualities inside of a room. However, you can actually use them to keep some of the noise you’re making from going through the walls.

There are many acoustic foam panels on the market to choose from, even though most of them are great for this purpose, I personally think Foamily Foam Panels are the best in my own opinion (Click to check price on Amazon).

4. Soundproof the Ceiling

Ceilings are probably the most difficult area to soundproof. However, if your goal is to stop as much noise as possible from escaping the room, then you might want to attach some foam panels up there. Acoustic foam will ensure that sound doesn’t bounce or pass through the ceiling.

5. Use Bass Traps

This can be a great idea if you are trying to contain some low-frequency sounds. Bass traps are acoustic energy absorbers which are designed to damp low-frequency sound.

You can usually see bass traps in the corners of recording studios because that’s where low-frequency buildup usually takes place. Therefore, what you can do is place all your traps in the corners where they will absorb the most amount of bass.

What I really like about this product is that it doesn’t only keep sound in the room but also helps prevent sound waves from bouncing around.

6. White Noise Machine

While using a white noise may not seem to be the right choice for this project, I can assure you that it will work if you use it correctly. The best way to prevent noise is to actually play the white noise outside instead of inside the room.

I know you must be wondering if I’m crazy but if you want the sounds in the room to be unheard from the outside, you should play the white noise right outside the door.

Here is an article on the best white noise machines.

If you follow these steps you should be able to completely block noise from escaping your room. However, doing this can take a lot of time but I can assure you that it’s worth the hassle. Also the more money you’re willing to spend on the project, the better it will be.
